Ukraine is just the sideshow. The main event is the destabilization of Russia and regime change. A resolution before Congress now is aimed to do just that. It could possibly lead to a war between the US and Russia too. The bill is House Resolution 758.
House Resolution 758 [ See it HERE ] could be the authorization for war with Russia. It wouldn't be the first time that this type of resolution was used to start a war.
George W. Bush cited Bill Clinton's Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 (House Resolution 4655) in justifying Bush's illegal invasion of Iraq. If one liked the Iraq War one will love a War with Russia. And neocons, neoliberals, the military industrial complex and war profiteers loved the Iraq War.
House Resolution 758 is laying the legal groundwork. It has an Orwellian title:
"H.R. 758: Strongly condemning the actions of the Russian Federation, under President Vladimir Putin, which has carried out a policy of aggression against neighboring countries aimed at political and economic domination."
An example of H.R. 758 provisions is to:
"Support the efforts by President Poroshenko to establish a lasting peace for Ukraine by disarming of separatist and paramilitary forces in eastern Ukraine and calls on the (US) President to provide the government of Ukraine with necessary defense articles, services, and intelligence in order to defend its territory and sovereignty."
Propaganda is a necessary first phase of starting a war. It creates the popular support. House Resolution 758 provides for a lot more war propaganda. It authorizes:
"The President and the Department of State to develop a strategy to produce or otherwise procure and distribute news and information in the Russian language to countries with significant Russian-speaking populations."
Does anybody doubt that this "Russian language" propaganda will find its way back into English speaking media? Almost every anti-Russian article in the Guardian starts with "Kiev says". Publishing propaganda and then having it picked up in the main stream media as "news" is an old trick.
The main stream media as usual kowtows to the government and plays its role of propagandists; instead of being an independent fourth estate that balances the excesses of the state. The Guardian has 'given up the ghost' and is now a full-fledged member of the propaganda machine of the main stream media too.
George Soros is the money man of Eurasia.net that has co-opted the Guardian to create the New East Network [ See it HERE ]. Other non-taxpaying and government-private funded, so-called "Non-Governmental Organizations" (NGO"s), have piled on with propaganda too. They do in public what the CIA used to do in private. The daily propaganda is intense and H.R. 758 contains provisions to further corrupt the media.
The West has lusted to colonize Russia and Ukraine for hundreds of years. Historically, Ukraine was part of Russia. Russia's first capital was not Moscow but Kiev. Russia and Ukraine have rich farm land, abundant natural resources, vast territory and a poor, but educated, population.
One of the main reasons Hitler started World War 2 was that he wanted to colonize the Russian 'bread basket' region of Ukraine. One reason that Hitler killed so many Ukrainians was that he wanted to ethnically cleanse Ukrainian and replace the population with German colonizers.
Past attempts of invading Russia ended in humiliating defeats for the invaders and also immense suffering for the Russian people. Russia has learned from the history of Western aggression. That history was why Stalin insisted at the end of WW2 that Russia needed to occupy the Satellite countries of Eastern Europe as a buffer zone against invasion.

At the end of the Cold War, Bush the senior, agreed that NATO would honor a buffer zone between NATO and Russia. The US and its NATO allies have reneged on that promise made to Russia's Mikhail Gorbachev. It is the US and NATO's aggressively pushing NATO up to the Russian border that is the cause of the reigniting of the Cold War.
It is the threat to Russia of NATO in Ukraine that is the aggression and not a Vladimir Putin that is threatening Western Europe. To say, as Obama and House Resolution 758 do, that Russia should be condemned and punished for "continuing political, economic, and military aggression against Ukraine" is to turn logic on its head. It was the US sponsored destabilization of Ukraine that resulted in the overthrow of a democratically elected government that was the illegal US aggression against the sovereignty of Ukraine.
The motive for the US aggression towards Russia is the same as it is elsewhere in the US Empire. The West's oligarchs, neoliberals, neocolonialists and neocons want to plunder Russia's oil, gas and natural resources both above the ground and below the ground. They want to privatize Russia's state enterprises for their own enrichment. The West's oligarchs want to plunder Russia's oligarchs. They are nostalgic for the good-ole-days when they had a drunken Boris Yeltsin in charge of Russia at the end of the Soviet Union. They will never forgive Putin for taking away the punch bowl to their party.
Obama polishes the jack-boots of the neocons while they goosestep the US into a war with Russia. The neocons assure Obama that he needn't worry about a nuclear holocaust that will destroy the planet. The same people that said Iraq would be a cakewalk have promised Obama that Russia always backs down. And Obama and Congress believe them?
The Guardian and the rest of main stream media scream about the threat of Russian aggression while NATO masses tanks, missiles and troops on Russia's border. European farmers and workers suffer while the US tries to bust the Ruble. The American consumers get cheap gasoline for a while, as the US and Saudi Arabia manipulate oil prices to a four-year low to hurt the Russian economy.
Propaganda, military intimidation, economic warfare and legal maneuvering such as the "war resolution" H.R. 758 is the prelude to a war. Russia has every reason to fear NATO in Ukraine. The Russians have every right to defend themselves. Self-defense is not aggression. Putin and Russia have shown tremendous restraint.
The West is lulled by the false belief that Putin runs Russia all by himself. He doesn't. He has his oligarchs and politicians to answer to too. Russia has its hawks and military-industrial complex. A military coup or right-wing regime change in Russia could lead to a much worse military confrontation between the US and Russia much sooner. Our leaders need to show restraint, maturity and sanity instead of saber rattling.
The political situation in Russia could change very quickly. That is how wars happen and get out of control. It could even lead to a nuclear war. Obama, the State Department, the oligarchs, the neocons, war profiteers and the main stream media are calling for regime change in Russia. They should be careful what they pray for.
